But as a Netflix original film, Flanagan has the support and resources to spend a whole film inside a bedroom… and explore the darkest corners therein. Hardly the stuff of easy adaptation, the actual implications of why this woman has been stuck in one place, both in a horrifying moment of short-term survival and in a more abstract overview of her whole life, would likely make this tale of middle-aged despair “unfilmmable” to any number of modern studios. For here is a movie that’s focused essentially on a woman who can’t pull herself out of bed. In fact, the most daring thing about the picture is its exact smallness. No major special effects explode here, nor are there alternate dimensions there isn’t even a creepy dancing clown. To be sure, there is (arguably) nothing supernatural about Gerald’s Game, nor anything particularly “high-concept,” at least within the industry definition of that term. Dunkirk is visceral, big-budget filmmaking that can truly be called art.As the third major Stephen King adaptation in only a few months, Mike Flanagan’s Gerald’s Game is an intensely intimate nightmare-and perhaps the most effectively haunting of the three films.
Nolan's is an epic achievement-the very definition of what cinema can and should be. And for every second, you feel as if you are there (whether you want to be or not). By recounting the events of May 1940, when more than 300,000 Allied troops were pinned down on the beaches of France, waiting for deliverance or-more likely-death, Dunkirk is less about victory than survival amidst hopelessness. Watching it is like sitting through Saving Private Ryan's kinetic, nerve-wracking opening D-Day invasion stretched out to feature length. Switching seamlessly among land, sea, and air, Nolan uses his massive canvas to expand our understanding of war, stripping it of artificial gung-ho dialogue in favor of harrowing sensation. I'd counter by saying that, like the most revolutionary movies, it has merely created a new storytelling vocabulary.
Some have argued that Nolan's film lacks narrative coherence. But Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk breaks free from its precursors by redefining what it feels like to experience combat through film-the chaos, the confusion, and the courage under fire-by fusing sight and sound to conjure the year's most relentless and fully immersive cinematic event. There's certainly been no shortage of World War II films over the years.
